Biography:

Dr. Lukasz Kurgan received the M.Sc. degree (with honors) from the AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland in 1999 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, U.S.A. in 2003. Dr. Kurgan joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 2003, where he was promoted to the Associate Professor rank in 2007. He is a founder and director of the biomine lab (http://biomine.ece.ualberta.ca/). His research group specializes in the development and application of modern data mining methods in bioinformatics, with focus on analysis of sequence, structure, and function of biologically interesting macromolecules. Dr. Kurgan is involved, as a steering committee member, in organization of the International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications. He serves on the editorial board of several journals including Neurocomputing, Open Proteomics Journal, Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering, and Open Bioinformatics Journal.
