iCBBE2008 Held Successfully in Shanghai, China

       The 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering (iCBBE2008) sponsored by IEEE EMBS, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Wuhan University was held from May 16th to 18th in Shanghai, China. Many distinguished scholars from IEEE EMBS, Harvard University, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, University of Oklahoma, University of Houston, University of Tokyo, University of California at Los Angels, Gordon Life Science Institute, etc. together with renowned researchers from a number of famous corporations such as Nokia, Motorola, Orange, etc. attended the conference.  There are more than 900 people around the world attended the conference. The conference consists of 11 keynote speeches, 18 oral sessions and 18 poster sessions. They had in-depth academic exchange and discussion on the results and development of studies on many fields of bioinformatics and biomedical engineering.

 

This conference is one of the major conferences sponsored by IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), USA. The conference proceedings have been published by IEEE. All papers accepted have been included in IEEE Xplore and will be indexed by EI.  Prof. Kuo-Chen Chou as one of the Co-chairs delivered a welcome speech at the opening ceremony. The iCBBE Organizing Committee organized a donation for the WenChuan earthquake relief during the opening ceremony. All the participants expressed their sadness and sympathy for the victims of Wenchuan earthquake, 6500 RMB has been donated by the attendees within one day. The donated money has been wire transferred to the Red-Cross of China on May 17th, 2008.

 

More than 10 distinguished scholars have been invited to deliver the keynote speeches during the conference: Prof. James J. Chou from Medical School at Harvard University, Dr. Wolfgang Kainz from U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Prof. Hong LIU from the University of Oklahoma, Prof. Zhi-Pei LIANG from the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, Prof. Kuo-Chen CHOU from the Gordon Life Science Institute, Dr. Glen Gordon from the EM PROBE Technologies, Prof. Yixue LI from the Shanghai Center for Bioinformation Technology, Prof. Kenta Nakai from the University of Tokyo, Prof. Jian SHEN from the University of California at Los Angles. The content of the speeches covered many fields including Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Safety of Wireless Communications Devices and Biomedical Imaging, which fully exhibited the substantial achievements made in bioinformatics and biomedical engineering.

 

The conference also selected the best student papers of iCBBE2008, encouraging the young students to make more progress in bioinformatics and biomedical engineering areas. After careful reviewing by many experts, the best student papers went to the students from University of Kentucky, University of Illinois at Chicago, Virginia State University and Osaka Sangyo University.

 

        The iCBBE 2009 will be held in Beijing in the middle of June. It is expected that there will be more scholars around the world to attend the iCBBE .
